2017 Club Hill Climb

Sunday 1st October saw the clubs second hill climb challenge take place on the course at Concrete Lane just outside Wendens Ambo.
Following a short ride from town to warmup, around 30 club members arrived at the top of the climb for registration and a warming cuppa from Sue McGilveray's popup café camper van. The rain mostly held off and after the official briefing the competitors headed down the climb to the start.

The climb is modest by national, even county standards but still enough to tire the legs when attacked at speed.
The competition was closely fought, and after everyone’s effort regrouped for more hot drinks, hot dogs and doughnuts from Sue’s camper van to hear the results.

Congratulation go to Matt Harvey with the fastest time of 1min 57sec, 2 seconds ahead of club captain Steve Parry-Jones. They were the only sub two minute times and hinted that there may have been a slight tailwind helping to push them up compared with the 2min 7sec winning time from the previous year. The fastest woman was Hazel Turton with time of 3min dead. Hill Climb Results 2017

It was a great event organised by the club, and thanks go to the volunteers who gave up their chance to race by marshalling, timing or taking photos, but special thanks go to Alan and Sue McGilveray who again went the extra mile organising everyone and supplying the food and drinks.

Walden Velo riders compete in World Championships

Donna Dale and John Calvert spent the bank holiday weekend competing in UCI Grand Fondo World Championships in Albi, France. To qualify to ride in the race both had posted excellent times in the recent Tour of Cambridge. The 97km race on Sunday in the heat of Southern France resulted in Donna finishing 23rd out of 72 in the 45-50 age group (4th British rider home out of 33 in that age group) and John finishing 71st out of 168 in the 60 to 64 age group (5th out of 45 British riders in the group). A great achievement - the "mortal" members of the club look forward to their return and hearing the full story.
