Thetford Winter Series Round 3

posted 6 Feb 2015, 05:09 by Walden Velo
Last weekend was the 3rd round of the Thetford Winter series held at Mayday Meadows. The weather was behaving with a slight frost but the promise of climbing temperatures and a try track. Initial discussions revolved around how much kit to wear, followed quickly by the touchy subject of holiday weight and who might have let themselves go over the Christmas break! 5 hardy members of Walden Velo made the trip east but sadly without the presence of our illustrious club captain John Archer after a tumble on the ice the week before. Initial discussions revolved around how much kit to wear, followed quickly by the touchy subject of holiday weight and who might have let themselves go over the Christmas break!

Following previous performances Andrew Riley and myself were gridded for the 4 hour race while further back Paul Whiffen and Greg Herring had to fight for position in the pack. Gary was WV’s sole representative in the 2 hour race starting a few minutes later.

As the gun went I tried to keep pace with the leading but quickly backed off after the first piece of singletrack had strung the race out. I tried to settle into a pace I thought I could maintain but, as usual, slightly overestimated my fitness leading to a very slow and painful last few laps! I finally caught Andrew with about 2.5 hours gone and then Greg on the final lap. Both proving their endurance abilities by still being capable of holding a conversation and giving me some grief at this stage of the race!

All members of the team finished well with myself 5th in the Under 40’s category, Paul 11th, Greg 15th and Andy 22nd in the Over 40’s while in the 2 hour Gary fought to complete 4 laps. Everyone enjoyed the 6 mile course made up of fast and swoopy singletrack but perhaps the most used word was ‘pain’ even though it was said with a grin. 4 hours racing is a tough challenge after nearly 2 months without a race!

This series is a great opportunity to dust off your neglected mountain bikes and come out for some fun riding without having to worry about cars and black ice. If you’ve never raced before it is a perfect introduction with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and an easy to understand format. If you’re not sure about the 4 hour race there are also options of 1 and 2 hours, and a great kids option too. There will always be a few WV'ers racing that you can park next to for some last minute advice!
